STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVITIES
LSU has a student chapter of
The Wildlife Society, a national organization of wildlife
professionals. Activities include student/faculty cookouts,
seminars, field trips, and participation in the wildlife
conclave with students from other southeastern universities.
More
information on the Wildlife Club.
Students in the fisheries
programs are encouraged to join the parent society and the
Louisiana Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. Many
aquaculture students participate in local and national
meetings of the World Aquaculture Society. Most students
participate in seminars, the fall pig roast, the spring
crawfish boil, and field trips that sponsored by the
School's Aquaculture and Fisheries Club.
The LSU Student Chapter
strives to prepare future foresters for the challenges and
changes that face natural resource professionals. Through
the chapter the students participate in fun and exciting
activities throughout the campus and community.

information on the LSU Student Chapter of SAF
Vanessa Tobias
and Amy Scaroni, Wildlife
and Fisheries Ph.D. students under Dr. Andy Nyman, recently
founded the first student chapter of the Society of Wetland
Scientists at LSU. The chapter is interdepartmental, and
charter members include both graduate and undergraduate
students from RNR, Oceanography & Coastal Sciences, and
Environmental Studies. The mission of the student chapter
coincides with the national mission to,
"promote
understanding, scientifically based management, and
sustainable use of wetlands." Additional service activities
will focus on community involvement, and strive to promote
stewardship of local wetlands. The new student chapter at
LSU joins alongside existing ones at Duke,
University of
Florida, and Michigan Tech.
Partnerships with these SWS chapters will allow students to
network with colleagues from across the country. Support
from the national SWS organization and the University’s
Center for Student Leadership and Involvement will assist in
sending student members to the regional and international
SWS conferences, where they can present their research to
the wetland community. For more information, please contact
Vanessa Tobias ( vtobia1@lsu.edu) or
Amy Scaroni (ascaro1@lsu.edu)
Students with outstanding
University academic records and who have demonstrated
leadership ability are invited to join Xi Sigma Pi, the
national scholastic honor society in forestry. This
organization is active in promoting professional forestry
activities on campus and works closely with the student
chapter of SAF in many of its activities. For more
information please contact Dr. Quang Cao at
qcao@lsu.edu .
