Research Interests

My research interests are broad, but they all involve wetlands and/or wetland wildlife.  I have worked extensively in floodplain ecosystems, particularly in the Mississippi River Valley.  More recently, I have worked on breeding habitat characteristics and migration patterns of waterbirds in Louisiana.  Although my research spans a wide range of topics, my ultimate goal is to provide timely information to assist large-scale wetland and wildlife conservation efforts.

Teaching

I team-teach two graduate courses: (1) Floodplain Ecology (with Dr. Richard Keim) and (2) Restoration and Management of Wetlands (with Dr. Andy Nyman).  We teach these courses from a systems-based perspective with a strong emphasis on the basic hydrologic and geomorphic processes structuring these systems and the effects of these processes on ecosystem functions.  The temporal and spatial patterns of habitat use by wildlife are also emphasized, particularly from the perspective of restoration and management of these systems.  Our courses have a strong field component, as evidenced by several field trips, which facilitate a greater understanding of these principles.
